More of a dramatic revue than a musical, per se, blues in the night is packed with classic songs from the blues songbook – a jukebox show, if you will, of numbers from the likes of bessie smith, johnny mercer, duke ellington and harold arlen. set in a humid 1930s chicago, the plotless story is a scant frame on which the songs are hung.

Sultry, sweet and morose, blues in the night invites us into the lives and reveries of four down and out inhabitants of 1930s chicago. the plot, loosely woven yet enough to frame each bereft. Sunday’s two showings of blues in the night brought the hackney empire a solid blues score and some genuinely scorching numbers. set in chicago in 1939, the musical was a back to basics.
