Blues In The Night вђ Hackney Empire Musical Theatre Reviewођ Originally conceived by actor director sheldon epps, blues in the night is basically a compilation show of famous blues numbers by the likes of bessie smith, harold arlen, johnny mercer, duke ellington, benny goodman, billy strayhorn, ted koehler, alberta hunter, ida cox etc. there is no book to speak of, just a thin thread telling the story of three women and the one man they have in common. More of a dramatic revue than a musical, per se, blues in the night is packed with classic songs from the blues songbook – a jukebox show, if you will, of numbers from the likes of bessie smith, johnny mercer, duke ellington and harold arlen. set in a humid 1930s chicago, the plotless story is a scant frame on which the songs are hung.

Sunday’s two showings of blues in the night brought the hackney empire a solid blues score and some genuinely scorching numbers. set in chicago in 1939, the musical was a back to basics.
