How To Stop Making Five Biggest Mistakes New Cinematographers Make 1. not loading the film correctly. this is probably the most embarrassing of all the mistakes i made, and the worst part is that it happened more than once! a couple of months ago, when i started. Nearly every film shooter will at some point get developed negatives back from the lab with nothing but edge writing and numbers on them. there are two possibilities: 1) your light meter is way, way, way, way, way off, or 2) you didn’t load the film properly. for 35mm cameras, a good indicator of the latter is that you loaded a 36 exposure. 4. opening the camera with film inside. opening the back of the camera before rewinding the film can result in an exposed (and ruined) roll of film. how to prevent: always rewind your film fully before opening the camera back. most cameras have a film rewind lever and a small window to show whether film is loaded. The images above show an overexposed image straight out of the scanner. the after has the exposure lowered by 2 stops in lightroom. all films are not equal in terms of under exposition.
