I have a cold steel cutlass (that is the thing with the biggest guard i have available) and just gave it a shot, definitely doable, it is all in the wrist. that being said, that cutlass (similarly to a basket hilted sword) will likely have a lot more weight focused on the grip, and in turn will tire you out a lot faster.
