Vw T4 Cooling Fans Thermostatic Switch Problem Youtube The fan switch is located on the left hand side of the radiator as you stand facing the engine with the bonnet open. its job is to detect the water temperature and if it is too hot, then the switch will activate the electric fans to help cool the water. i got the switch from gsf, and it cost about £15. To test a fan motor, unplug the electrical connector at the motor and use fused jumper wires to connect battery power and ground directly to the fan. if the fan does not operate, replace the motor. 2. if the motor tests ok, check the cooling fan thermo switch, located at the bottom of the radiator on the driver's side. The fan sensor is just to the left of the vacuum pump. there are two sesors the top one is the fan one.the bottom one is the gauges one.they are differant colours. if you pull the plug off and use a bit of wire you can poke it into the plug cap and test the fans one should come on first (right one i think) then both will come on together when. 1., pull the wiring clip off the temp sensor at the radiator. 2. jumped the wires, one pair at a time. the outside ones made the fan go to high speed, but one of the middle pairs also turned the fan on high speed. i was under the impression that one combo should turn the fan on low speed, another high speed and the third won't do anything.

Following on from replacing the radiator fan switch, i next turned my attention to the thermostat. the thermostat regulates the water temperature in the engine. when the engine is cold, the thermostat blocks cooled water from entering the engine and just allows the water to circulate around the engine – allowing it to warm up quicker. It was used with a 100 watt one speed fan. i think the a c models used a two speed fan and thus need a dual range thermoswitch; with that, the 95c 102c (cut in temps) dual switch would be what i would match to it. it uses three prongs. if you have the 95c cut in thermoswitch, then i suggest using the 80c thermostat.
