Why Do We Need Faithful Preaching 2 Timothy 4 1 5 The apostle paul charged timothy to, “preach the word! be ready in season and out of season. convince, rebuke, exhort, with all long suffering and teaching.”9 this is the work of the evangelist. he is to faithfully proclaim the unsearchable riches of christ; to make the sinner aware of his sins; to correct with compassion; to encourage with. Paul uses nine imperatives here, five in verse 2 and four in verse 5. in 4:1 2, paul shows why preaching is of utmost importance. in 4:3 4, he shows why hearing the word is of utmost importance. then (4:5), in light of inevitable opposition, he shows why a faithful pastor must persevere in preaching the word. 1. Timothy is to be ready, willing, and able to preach the word of god in season and out of season. on the one hand, this is simple enough to understand; timothy is to read all the time. there are only two seasons. we are either in season or we are out of season, so be ready to preach all the time. The word “reprove” in verse 2 means to convince of sin. it’s to convince of sin by argument. it’s to preach the word to the intellect and to bring conviction of sin. a preacher worth his salt isn’t afraid to preach sin. he doesn’t gloss over those sins that will offend individuals. you also rebuke.

To “preach the word” in 2 timothy 4:2 simply means to communicate the truth of god’s word. the verse goes on to tell us that we should be ready to do this when it is convenient and when it is not (“in season and out of season” or, as the nlt has it, “whether the time is favorable or not”). perhaps one of the most convenient times.
